LuMen

bibliographic search interface

LuMen is divided into three search environments: the Library collections, ULiSSE, and federated search in databases.

The Library collections contain:
  • all records catalogued at the Library of the Academy
  • e-journals either in subscription or open-access and relevant to the library's sphere of activity
  • the integral index of the two Ticino jounals devoted to architecture ("Rivista tecnica della Svizzera italiana" 1914-2005 and "Archi" 1998->)

ULiSSE (University Library Service Search Engine) is a mega-index made of hunderds of millions bibliographic records among which the Library selected the most relevant for the Academy's sphere of activity. Resources immediately accessible as full-text are highlighted in the search results.

The interface's searchable databases can be combined at will and can be searched simultaneously. To access the database selection mask, please see the "Useful links" section on the right. Logging in ensures that one's choices are saved and will be found on every subsequent access
Tangenziali, sopraelevate e viadotti | Bi10 Biennale dell'immagine
Since the 1970s and 1980s big cities become more and more congested by the traffic of private vehicles. The usual solutions in the past consisted almost exclusively in trying to broaden fast connecting roads by adding orbital roads, skyways and viaducts to the network of existing streets. The exhibited historical photographs tell us about the building of huge infrastructural constructions and the deep transformations that these massive interventions brought with them, both in terms of urban spaces and morphology. A selection of orginal formats, blow ups, videos and books shows the social, relational, and environmental effects of these transformations, and how they affected the behaviour of people who lived in their area of influence. The photographs representing the Italian construction sites in Cosenza, Pescara, Genoa and Naples, the orbital road around Milan, and the viaducts of Fichera, Gela, and Pontebba are part of the Academy Library's IN.CO. S.p.A. collection. The IN.CO. S.p.A. was one of the most successful engineering companies in Italy: until the 1990s, under the direction of engineer Silvano Zorzi, the company designed and built some of the most important and expensive insfrastructural projects of the country.
The exhibited photographs were shot by several famous photo agencies of the time: Guglielmo Chiolini-Pavia; Angelo Lauriola-Rome; Publifoto-Genoa and Palermo; Foto Attualità of E. Ceolin and R. Sartori-Treviso; Foto Rinaldo Bovio-Genoa.

Augusto Guidini
Augusto Guidini from Barbengo, Ticino (1853-1928) is rated in the Swiss architectural inventory 1850-1920 - INSA as a pioneer of art history and restoration together with prominent personalities such as Jacob Burckhardt, Johann Rudolf Rahn, Edoardo Berta and Eugen Probst. The same publication also places him among the most important and cultivated architects of the period by publishing his portrait on its cover next to the portraits of Gottfried Semper, Karl Moser and Hans Bernoulli. These flattering considerations have not yet been followed by an appropriate amount of historic and artistic research.
The Academy of architecture library in Mendrisio, curator of Augusto Guidini's and many other famous architects' book donations, now sets out to fill this gap and presents the results of new research based on previously unpublished archival fonds, direct sources, evidence from his built work, and his architectural heritage.
This first monographic study of Augusto Guidini's work, enriched by a complete and detailed atlas of built and unbuilt projects, publishes contributions by Riccardo Bergossi, Stefania Bianchi, Valeria Farinati, Arnaldo Guidini, Chiara Lumia, Ornella Selvafolta, and Angela Windholz. They trace the human and professional destiny of this versatile artist, refined draughtsmann and major intellectual figure of his times.
