Access to the library

Access to the library to consult the bibliographical material is free. Most of the material is on the open shelves and is easy for users to consult.

These services are available to teaching staff and students of the University, as well as to external users, who should register first (see Art. 3 Access and Registration in the Università della Svizzera italiana Libraries Regulations)

Access to the Internet

The library offers its users access to the internet for documentation and research purposes free of charge.

Restrictions for children

Users under 14 years of age can only access the internet if accompanied by an adult over 18.

Young people between 14 and 18 can only access the internet individually if a parent or tutor has attended in person and signed the appropriate authorization form.

Parents and tutors - not the library and its staff - have sole responsibility for the information their children or the children in their care find on the internet.

Conditions of use

Users are requested to use the tools available to them appropriately, respecting the educational and information purposes that they were created for.

The following actions are prohibited:

  • Attempts to compromise the security of local and remote information systems

  • Damaging or altering the hardware and software components of computers, networks or databases

  • Unauthorized use of an account, access credentials or IP identification numbers

  • Breach of the licensing conditions of any software

  • Breach of the privacy of third parties

  • Unauthorized attempts to access files belonging to third parties Unauthorized copying of material protected by copyright Unauthorized installation of software wholly or partially

  • Infringement of Netiquette rules

  • Harassment of third parties

Wireless network

Users in possession of a mobile device can register independently to obtain access to the "USIME-Guest" wireless network without any time limitations.

User cards

User cards are free of charge for all users following registration at SLSP. All cards for libraries affiliated with Bibliopass are valid.

Copying

Anyone who is authorized to use the services of the library can reproduce texts for study purposes within the terms set out in the laws on copyright. Reproductions of material belonging to the library should only be made using the panoramic scanners.

Photocopies of newspapers and personal material are permitted.

For particularly fragile or rare documents, the library personnel will assess the possibility of reproducing them and, where it is possible, will carry it out. The reproduction should be made taking care not to damage or alter the state of the material and the equipment in any way.

Information and reference

The aim of the information and consultation service is to assist users in their research and in their use of the documentary resources available, whether printed or electronic.

The library personnel will provide the necessary help for deciding the right research strategy and identifying suitable sources.

Opening times

During the academic semesters:

Monday – Friday: 09:00-20:00

Saturday: 10:00-17:00

Changes

Any changes to the opening times for periods between semesters, holidays or special events will be announced on the library website and on notices displayed inside the library.

Specific services

On weekdays from 18:30 to 20:00, the information and consultation service is reduced since it is provided by auxiliary staff.

Requests for material kept in the library’s external storages that are made on Friday after 16:00 or on Saturday will be dealt with the following Monday.

Requests and reservations

Reserved materials must be collected within 7 days. Failure to collect reserved materials will incur a fine of CHF 5.00 per volume.

Consultation of the special collections

Bibliographic materials in the special collections can be reserved through the library catalog for consultation in person, which can only take place by appointment.

The graphics and photography collections cannot be reserved, but are available for consultation by appointment.

Home loans

Library users can borrow up to a maximum of 100 works at the same time.

* An exception is made for USI personnel and academic staff, who are permitted a seven-day loan not renewable.

Renewals

The loan is automatically renewed up to a maximum of five times, unless the item has been requested by another user. In this case, the expiry date cannot be extended.

Volumes in the author collections can only be borrowed for a period of 7 days, without the possibility of renewal.*

After the fourth warning, USI affiliates will have their account blocked and will not be able to access the information services.

Loss and damage

In the event of the loss or damage of borrowed documents, the user will have to pay compensation for the item. The library will inform the user of the amount to be paid for its replacement. The user will have their access to loans suspended until they have paid the due amount. A supplement of CHF 20.00 will be added to the amount due for administrative expenses. As regards books that are out of print, the user will have to pay a compensation sum determined by the Management.

Inter-library loans

Bibliographic material that is not available at the library can be requested from other Swiss or foreign libraries through inter-library loans.

Users can also request photocopies of magazine articles that are not available at the library.

Users should pay the amount due at the time they collect the documents requested.

Collection of documents

The materials ordered should be collected within seven days of arrival: failure to collect the items will incur a fine of CHF 5.00 per item, which will be added to the postal costs incurred (minimum CHF 8.00).
